Call for participants

The Pekinpah Association is inviting participants to enroll in educational program carried out within the project Creative Bodies in Movement: under the mentorship of experienced musician, composer and educator Elvis Homan, we are focusing on making (film) music.

The 40-hour music program, followed by 4 hrs of individual counseling, is designed for individuals of all ages and musical background, and is aimed at beginners as well as those who already have some musical knowledge. The workshop will be taking place from 7 to 18 November 2022, Monday to Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Studio Pekinpah, Trg prekomorskih brigad 1 in Ljubljana.

Who is it for?
Migrants
- young adults and adults (15+) - who moved to Slovenia, feel creative or would like to develop their creative skills; for those who are interested in creating music, want to gain new skills or upgrade existing knowledge (both beginners and those who play an instrument are welcome); for those eager to meet new people and spread their network of contacts.

What can you get from this?
If you are an artist, building up your skills in the workshop will increase the opportunities of employment in Slovenia thus spreading your social and cultural horizons. If you are not experienced in creating music, you’ll gain new skills, engage in the process of making music, and you’ll enjoy and socialise with different people. In both cases, you’ll meet and work with renowned, amazing artists, make new friends and have great fun while learning, strengthening intercultural dialogue on the way.

  • As the participant, you will:
    -
develop the skills to design and develop creative ideas - Creativity is the ability to create new ideas, concepts or solutions to a problem; it is a method to establish new connections between existing ideas or concepts
    - gain experience in teamwork and collaborative skills, as a part of multicultural community/group
    - improve your working knowledge of sound design for film and theatre
    - acquire the basic foundational knowledge, skills and habits to effectively use computer technology
    - spread your network of professional and personal contacts
    - have opportunity to be part of the public event with you own project
    - get special individual counselling, which can help you with new job opportunities

  • Overview of the activities:
    -
introduction to different percussion instruments and different musical rhythms from around the world
    - introduction to different coordination exercises needed to play
    - learning the principles of free improvisation, which allows for more freedom and creativity in playing
    - learning basics of music theory
    - forming and playing in different musical ensembles
    - focus on film music - shaping and manipulation of sound, picking the right instruments according to the film genre, and the balancing of the tensions, divergences and dynamics of a specific film frame
    - using the computer music program Ableton - you will learn the basics of the program and use it to write film music and create various sound effects
    - engagement in preparation for and production of the public presentation, which will close the project on 28 February 2023

The workshop will be organised in three parts:

1. Drums - percussion
Participants will be introduced to different percussion instruments and different musical rhythms from around the world (such as Pop, Rock, Disco, Reggae, Jazz, Funk, Samba, etc.). They will also be introduced to different coordination exercises needed to play. Participants will form several small percussion ensembles to try out group playing, and will also learn in practice the principles of free improvisation, which allows more freedom and creativity in playing.

2. Group playing (band)
This part of the workshop is aimed at forming different musical ensembles with several instruments and singing. The content is designed in such a way that the participants play the music they like and in this way improve and develop their own musical knowledge. This part ncludes the basics of music theory, which will help participants to create original music on the spot. The participants who already play an instrument are therefore encouraged to bring their own instruments.

3. Film music
This part focuses on the creation and composition of film music: particular emphasis is placed on the shaping and manipulation of sound, the choice of instruments according to the film genre, and the balancing of the tensions, divergences and dynamics of a specific film frame. At the end of the workshop, the newly composed music will be recorded and presented. We will use the computer music program Ableton to help us in our work; participants will learn the basics of the program and use it to write film music and create various sound effects. It is recommended that participants bring their own computer and headphones.

    - razvijal/-a veščine zasnove in nadgradnje novih kreativnih idej.
    - razširil/-a mrežo profesionalnih in zasebnih poznanstev
