Dance Beyond Appraisal

Pekinpah has teamed up with Gibanica to support award-winning dancers through a donation campaign

Klemen Kovačič has been awarded the Biennial’s main award with his work Agmisterij and received a total of €2,135 through our initiative.

An award is more than just appraisal – it should also support creation!

Pekinpah has created an initiative that advocated that an award should not be merely a symbolic recognition but also a tangible incentive for further artistic work. For that matter, we collaborated with the Biennial of Contemporary Dance Art – Gibanica and collected donations to fund the Biennial’s main award. We personally contributed €2,000 to the award fund and others have supported with €135.

Contemporary dance is one of the most dynamic and prolific art forms today. Nevertheless, it remains financially under-supported. Our goal was to directly support artistic excellence by financially rewarding choreographers. Through donations, we supported the recipient of the main award Klemen Kovačič, with his work Agmisterij ensuring that it was not merely a symbolic recognition of artistic achievements but also a means for their further development.

In the 8-hour performance Agmisterij (Fourth Time), Klemen Kovačič traverses the entire cycle of human life. Drawing from his own childhood, he opens an inquiry into memories, identities, and the narratives we construct along the way, bids farewell to the past, and plays through various roles, (un)certainties, and contradictions of human existence. With astonishing presence, he immerses himself in a wide spectrum of performative acts—from dynamic movement articulations to butoh and a slow dedication to action—shifting between materiality and spirituality, the (in)dividual and the collective, the everyday and a broader perspective on life and death, in order to, through this ritual, uncover all that lies beneath the surface of life—and beyond it.
